Mentoring can be more dangerous than Refereeing
Ben Conlon, an experienced referee is always willing to give his time to support newly qualified referee’s, on this occasion Ben arrived at Spearpoint sports ground to mentor a new referee, just a short distance from his car he slipped on the wet surface followed by a “Crack”, a later X Ray confirmed he has broken his leg in 2 places.
Fortunately, Ben is a member of our branch, membership includes RA insurance, the Branch will be will be submitting a claim form to provide some help and support.
Ben would like to thank those who have sent their best wishes, he has stressed the Importance of being a member of our branch and the associated insurance if you are actively refereeing.
We wish Ben a speedy recovery especially as he will be out of action for 6 to 8 weeks.

Ben Conlon - Referee and Author
After 14 years of practising in the US I returned to the UK, in August 2002, and my family and I settled here in Ashford. I qualified as a Level 7 referee in 2004 and joined this branch of the RA.
On Thursday 19th September, I had my first Novel published on Amazon-Kindle. It is entitled PICKED by BEN WHITE. Located in New York and Los Angeles. PICKED is based upon something which happened to me as an attorney in Manhattan. The principal character is called KENT ASHFORD.
For one of the characters I have used my local barber GARY. His shop in Ashford PAPA GEE’S is also used as a setting in Washington Heights, New York City.
BOOK REVIEW
Title: Picked
Author: Ben White
Published: Amazon Kindle
This book follows the fortunes of character actor, Kent Ashford, who is waiting for his ‘big break’. The opportunity for fame presents itself when the role as Deputy District Attorney Christopher Darden becomes available in a film about the legal personalities involved in the O.J Simpson trial.
As luck would have it, Kent happens to be a Darden look-alike and seems to be a favourite for the role. He does however, lack knowledge of the court system and in order to give himself the edge on his competitors, decides to go to the Central Criminal Courts in Manhattan to observe the legal processes.
As fate would have it, trying to prove himself as simply a visitor is not as straightforward as it would seem. What happens next is far more than he could ever envisage and the storyline develops from there. Life changing events occur and he becomes entangled in legal intricacies and ‘horse trading’ as the story unfolds.
This is Ben White’s first novel and he uses his thirty-odd years’ experience of international legal practice, to introduce interesting and realistic characters and show us a novel, if sometimes cynical, look at the US legal system.
This book is an easy to read piece of fiction, fast paced with reasonably sized chapters and is ideal to pick up during coffee breaks. The characters are clearly described, colourful and easily envisaged; the situations are well explained and understandable, and the storytelling provides plenty of drama, romance and even some humour. Picked is a good, casual read with a new and interesting approach and being reasonably priced is well worth a try.
